Many people underestimate how important is extractor cleaning to minimize the amount of microscopic grease particles settling onto your kitchen surfaces. You extractor fan could also become noisier and less efficient if it’s blocked with dirt and grease. It is recommended to clean your extractor at least every 3 months.

How to Clean the Extractor Fan

Switch the extractor off from the mains before starting to clean.

  • Add a mild detergent to warm water
  • Dampen a soft cloth into the warm water and clean the extractor fan
  • You can use an old toothbrush to clean the dirt caught in the fan. Most extractors have detachable filters to help them clean. We use a steam cleaner to deeply clean the grease and dirt.
  • If you don’t have a steam cleaner, you can wash the filter in a sink of hot soapy water
  • Extractor filters can also be cleaned in a dishwasher, leave the filter in an upright position. Please note that the filter may discolour slightly but it will still work fine

Charcoal filters need to be changed every 4 – 6 months, depending on how often you cook and use extractor fan. Do not clean charcoal filters in dishwasher or hot water as this will reduce their efficiency.

How to Clean the Extractor Hood

Switch the extractor off from the mains before starting to clean.

  • Add a mild detergent to warm water
  • Dampen a soft cloth into the warm water and clean the inside and outside of the extractor hood

Please check your manufacturer’s manual to see which one of the following filters you have.

Paper filter:
Paper filters are disposable and easily replaceable. Paper filter should be changed once it’s discoloured or every month.

Metal filter:
Metal filters can be washed in a hot soapy water or dishwasher. Don’t worry if the filter discoloures slightly, it will still work.

Sponge filter:
Sponge filters can be washed in warm soapy water; you need to replace them after 5 – 6 washes.

Carbon filter:
Do not wash carbon filters, replace them every 6 months.

If you want to prolong the life your extractor and keep your kitchen grease and dirt free and sparkling clean then clean your extractor on a regular basis.
